‘Only a Boy, Only an Idea’ is not another history of Tottenham Hotspur. It is the surprising story of the man behind the club. Bobby wasn’t just one of the founders of Spurs, he was at the centre of every major development during the club’s first twenty years. In that time he was the first captain, first secretary, first known goal scorer and is responsible for today’s stadium standing where it does.
He did all this from his home at White Cottage, White Hart Lane, and that address was used for all official communications of the newly formed Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. Contemporaries agreed that without Bobby Buckle there would be no Spurs. That view is confirmed by Spurs‘ ‘Legend’ Steve Perryman, in the foreword;
“I am delighted to write the foreword to this book. As a player, captain, and trophy winner who spent 17 years wearing the famous lillywhite shirt, it is an honour to pay tribute to arguably the club’s most important founding father. Without one of my predecessors as Tottenham skipper, Bobby Buckle, it is no exaggeration to say there would have been no career at Spurs for me to enjoy and reflect on. There would have been no Tottenham Hotspur full stop. Every player, manager, fan, director, or indeed anyone with any connection in the club, owes Bobby an immense debt of gratitude.”
